The Russia-Ukraine conflict is increasingly spilling beyond Europe, with Africa emerging as the latest arena in their geopolitical rivalry. During a visit to Burundi, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Ukraine of supporting armed groups fighting governments across Africa, including in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Kyiv has rejected the allegations as Kremlin disinformation, accusing Moscow of trying to distract from Russia's own activities across the continent. The accusations come after previous disputes involving Sudan and Mali, where Ukraine has faced similar claims over alleged covert involvement. While neither side has presented independently verified evidence for its broadest accusations, the exchange highlights a growing battle for influence in Africa, where diplomacy, security partnerships and competing narratives have become an extension of the Russia-Ukraine war.
