President Trump signs executive order requiring AI firms to provide early model access to government

President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed an executive order requiring technology companies to provide the federal government with early access to their artificial intelligence models, allowing officials to assess their capabilities ahead of a full public release.

Reports suggest that this is a scaled-back version of a more comprehensive executive order that was originally intended to address the cybersecurity risks posed by artificial intelligence. The order, which was signed privately, asks certain AI companies to voluntarily submit their most powerful new models for government review 30 days before releasing them to the public.

President Trump was initially expected to sign a 90-day version of the order on May 21, but he abruptly rejected the draft just hours before the planned White House signing ceremony.

The White House's revisions to the executive order mark the latest shift in US AI policy. Trump had previously sought to ease regulatory burdens on AI development in an effort to strengthen US competitiveness against China. However, the administration has since moved toward a more restrictive approach as advanced models, such as Anthropic's Mythos, raised concerns about cybersecurity risks, including their potential impact on highly sensitive computer systems.
