Upcoming smartphones to look for

The beginning of each year witnesses the tech community in a flurry of excitement, as CES (Consumer Electronics Show) kicks off and takes you on a virtual joyride of gadgets and gizmos of the ‘highly-anticipated’ variety. 2012 started off no differently and the list of mobile handsets we were looking forward to just got bigger. Here’s the latest additions to our upcoming mobiles to look for listing.

Nokia Lumia 900

Nokia is seriously pushing their Lumia devices as far as their bank account can reach. From zany promotions to funky ad campaigns, the Finnish company has been banking heavily on their new range to get back to the No.1 spot. Nokia’s Lumia 800 may not have met with all the expectations of the eager tech consumer, but their lower priced Lumia 710 does have tremendous potential to appeal to the masses. With the recent announcement of the Lumia 900 coming to light with a few updated goodies like NFC and a 1.4GHz processor under the hood, Nokia could well be on its way up, before the second quarter is out. Hopefully, MS will introduce WP7 updates that will also help move the OS a little further along the smartphone line as well.

Sony Xperia S

Leaked, since early October of 2011, the Xperia S aka the Nozomi, has been making big waves in the Android community. Touted to take on the likes of the Galaxy Nexus, the Xperia as is loaded up with features like a 1.5GHz Dual Core GHz processor and 1GB RAM to power it up and Sony’s Mobile Bravia Engine to help streamline and enhance the visual experience. It’s bound to turn a few heads. Active noise cancellation should also make your call experience a little better as well.

Of course that’s not all, here are few of the other reported features -

As they’ve proved in the recent past with their Optimus 2X, LG could very well be the first, once again to launch the first quad core-powered mobile phone. Equipped with NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 chip and slated to run Ice Cream Sandwich, the X3 could very well be the heaviest hitter in the Android camp at lunch time. Although it’s yet to be officially announced, the leaked specs and images making the rounds depict a neatly moulded device that could take LG to higher ground in the mobile field.

Samsung Galaxy S III

Samsung’s entire Galaxy series has been doing extremely well and the Note has taken the world by storm. There have been periodic upgrades to the Galaxy S range, in particular from the original Galaxy S to the S II and the variants of the original - the S LCD and the S Plus. Samsung has also managed to keep the price and specs of the range extremely competitive. Naturally, after the Galaxy Nexus, one of the highly anticipated devices for the first quarter is the S III. Yet to be officially announced though, the S III is surely going to be the one to look forward to this year, before the iPhone 5 makes it out.

Could this be it?

There are no official specs available for the Galaxy S III, but it’s assumed that it would be in the quad core league with possibly a 1.8GHz processor at its beck and call. A 720 x 1280 AMOLED display could also be part of the deal. LTE and 3G support would also most likely be onboard. What could be presumed as a possible preview image of the device, an image recently made it out in a demo video of Samsung mobile tech at CES 2012. If the image is to be believed, we’re looking at a Note-sized device with a super thin bezel. What the Note doesn’t need though, is competition from its own camp.

HTC Edge

The HTC Edge will only add to the fierce quad core mobile battle that will soon commence. Few details were leaked back in November of 2011, but the race to be the first quad core running mobile handset is still on as, neither LG nor Samsung have officially unveiled their devices.

Looks a bit large and heavy

According to the leaked information, the HTC EDGE will be equipped with – 4.7-inch touchscreen, possibly also with a 720 x 1280 pixel resolution running HTC Sense 4.0 on top of Ice Cream Sandwich with an 8MP camera, Bluetooth 2.0 and Beat’s audio to power the music player. There’s also word of it being available in a 32GB model.
