Round Table: How big is too big for a smartphone display?

Have you seen the Sony Xperia Z Ultra and its massive display? Or the Samsung Galaxy Mega twins? What’s it with these devices with near tablet-like displays masquerading as phones? The trend started earnestly with the original Galaxy Note in 2011 and has picked up pace like nothing else in the smartphone industry.

Nowadays, a 5-inch flagship is the norm and all manufacturers have their fingers in the phablet pie. Nokia is considering a 6-inch Windows Phone device, which will be announced soon. Looks like this trend is not about to stop anytime soon, especially in India, where large screen devices such as the Galaxy Grand and the Micromax Canvas series have been a hit. Even when Huawei launched its first high-end phone in India, it ended up being the Huawei Ascend Mate with a huge 6.1-inch display. When size gets in the way of usability, there has to be a line drawn. But how big is too big? We discuss:
