Qualcomm's new chipset might not be called the Snapdragon 8150: Report

Apple's A12 Bionic and Huawei's Kirin 980 have already been launched, and now it's time for Qualcomm. We already know that the chipset will be unveiled on 4 December in Hawaii during the Qualcomm Technology Summit. Given that Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 845 last year at the same venue, this is quite obvious.While in the past, the new chipset has been referred to as  the Snapdragon 8150, a new report suggests that this might not be the case, and the device is called something entirely different.According to a report by PCMag, Qualcomm's new chipset which will go into all of the first major 5G phones isn't called the Snapdragon 8150. They claim that that "it's a mistake based on the internal name of sm8150" which was first identified by the publication XDADevelopers.[caption id="attachment_4984611" align="alignnone" width="1280"]

Image: tech2/Anirudh Regidi[/caption]The report doesnt mention any alternative name though.However, besides denying that the chipset is called Snapdragon 8150, they've also said that expected tri-cluster CPU design, is also wrong.We recently learned that, the Snapdragon 8150 would have four low-power Kryo Silver cores, with 128 KB L2 cache each, running at a maximum frequency of 1.8 GHz in one cluster. Then there would be a trio of Kryo Gold ones, with 256KB L2 cache each, and a maximum frequency of 2.419 GHz in another cluster. Fianlly, we'd see a single Kryo Gold core with double the L2 cache, at 512 KB and a maximum frequency of 2.842 Ghz.All these details, might not hold true if PCMag's claims are correct.We do not know what the chipset is going to be called. If the previous one was 845, this could either be the 855, or maybe Qualcomm is planning on launching entire new line for 5G chipsets.
