Qualcomm partners with Microsoft to release smart audio platform powered by Cortana

It looks like the age of smart speakers is upon us. While Amazon already has a headstart in this space with its line-up of Alexa sporting smart speakers, others such as Google and Microsft aren't that far either.

In fact, Qualcomm is partnering with Microsoft to jointly develop a Smart Audio Platform which will be powered by Cortana.

According to Qualcomm press release, the platform aims to integrate hardware and software required to help original equipment manufacturers (OEM) make smart speakers faster.

Anthony Murray, senior vice president and general manager, voice and music, Qualcomm Technologies International said, "Demand for voice control and voice-enabled services in the home is rapidly gaining traction, and our audio platform is now designed to offer greater flexibility for manufacturers wanting to deliver highly differentiated user experiences taking advantage of the power and personalisation capabilities of Cortana."

According to Microsoft's Jordi Ribas, the Microsoft Cortana powered Qualcomm chip housing smart speakers will augment the creativity and productivity of users.

The first batch of Qualcomm and Cortana powered smart speakers are expected to come out in the first half of this year.
