Sony is expanding support for its indie developers. After having opened up the Indie Games category in the PlayStation Store on the PS3, the Japanese company has announced on the PlayStation blog that it is now opening up a similar category for handheld gaming device PlayStation Vita. Right now, the Indie Games category on the PlayStation Vita is occupied by just-released Hotline Miami, Limbo, Guacamelee, Sound Shapes, Thomas Was Alone and Machinarium.
Don Mesa, Director, Product Planning and Platform Software Innovation at SCEA, made the announcement on the blog. "We recognize that the unique perspective that indie developers deliver contributes to the success and future of the gaming industry. And we’ve learned as much from working with talented indie developers over the last several years as (we hope) they have learned from us," he posted.
More from News AnalysisPierre Gravereau, Senior Manager, Digital Distribution, posted the earlier announcement of the Indie Games category on the PS3's online store on the PlayStation blog and highlighted the support Sony has offered independent developers by referring to the games that were recently released during the Spring Fever sale on the PlayStation Store.
He also noted in the comments to the blog post that indie games will not be relegated solely to the Indie Games category and will continue to be showcased on the store homepage and the usual promotional areas. He wrote, “Indie Games will ALSO live in categories such as PSN Games, All PS3 Games, and yes… they will also be from time to time on the store homepage and in our usual promotional areas in addition to now have a section to themeselves. :-)”
