Nokia HERE to work with local experts for its mapping system in India

Nokia’s mapping platform called HERE is now launching a community programme in India. The programme will be combining industry data along with crowd sourced data. HERE plans to pick a team of 1000 people from over a dozen select universities across the nation. Some of the colleges are Mount Carmel in Bangalore and the SAL Institute of Technology in Ahmedabad. HERE will work directly with the selected team. The aim of this initiative is to interact with local experts to share their knowledge about the areas.

This community programme will allow people to add missing streets, bridges and points of interest (POIs) other relevant information to its maps using the Map Creator tool. For maintaining the accuracy of the map, HERE plans to build a community map moderation system that will allow the new team as well as HERE to verify the additions before integrating them. Once integrated, HERE users will be able to access these changes within days.

Michael Halbherr, EVP of HERE believes that in fast-growing countries like India a community mapping approach paired with input from the right experts means HERE can keep pace with the ever-evolving landscape so that their maps are never obsolete. He also adds that it is not just about the number of people contributing to the map-making community that matter, but working with the right experts is also crucial.

HERE plans to work with teams in smaller towns to build road network and populated cities for finding new POIs.
