Mozilla Corp urges BN Srikrishna committee to prepare stronger laws for data protection, also highlights Aadhaar shortcomings

In an open letter to the BN Srikrishna committee, Mozilla Corporation has urged them to prepare stronger laws for data protection.[caption id="attachment_4309661" align="alignleft" width="380"] Representational image. It had also released a whitepaper regarding the data protection law.In a report by The Economic Times, Mitchell Baker, executive chairwoman, Mozilla Corporation wrote to the committee responsible for bringing data protection laws. She reportedly said in the letter that despite no proper data protection laws, it is making a push to make Aadhaar card mandatory for various government and private services.She further added said that this step comes in contradiction to the Supreme Court's position regarding Aadhaar and its use.She also emphasised on the sensitivity of biometric information, which is stored while applying for Aadhaar card and how it is vulnerable to being misused.In fact, Baker also pointed out that Aadhaar in its current form, takes the personal information of people for granted and people do not have much of a say over it.The letter has been signed by the Mozilla India Community members.The Supreme Court has been hearing the details of the petitions related to Aadhaar. It has been hearing various petitions regarding the Aadhaar.
