LG’s display arm has unveiled an interesting new 5.7-inch display that will possibly make its way to the upcoming LG G6.The display unit is unusual in that it features an aspect ratio of 18:9, at a resolution of 2880x1440. Most phones feature an aspect ratio of 16:9, which is perfect for media consumption. Some phones, like Xiaomi’s Mi Mix, pack in a 17:9 display, using the extra space for Android’s software buttons.LG has experimented with secondary displays in the past and it’s likely that LG intends to use the extra real estate to add some extra buttons at the top of the display. The company tells The Verge that it wants to maximise the screen-to-body ratio of its future phones. LG Display adds that the bezels for this panel have come down by 0.2mm at the top and 0.54mm at the sides. The display efficiency has apparently been improved by 30 percent as well.Whether we’ll actually see this 18:9 display in an upcoming LG smartphone remains to be seen, but come MWC (Mobile World Congress), we’ll know for sure.
