Intel reveals the graphical prowess of its new Haswell chipset

Intel has shed some light on the integrated graphical processing units of its newest chipset. The integrated GPUs will be part of the fourth generation of Intel's Core processors, and are three times as powerful as the previous iteration, according to Engadget. The GPUs have been split into three tiers—HD 5000, Iris and Iris Pro.

The HD 5000 will be powering Ultrabooks with 15W U-series processors. Despite it being the low-end version of the new graphics chip, it's still faster than the older Intel HD 4000 series integrated GPUs. Laptops using 28W U-series chips will use Iris, which is said to be twice as fast as older integrated chips when it comes to 3D. Where power efficiency isn't an issue, computers will use the Iris Pro chip, which has embedded DRAM. It is said to be twice as fast on H-series mobile chips and thrice as fast on R-series on the desktop.

Although all three chips can use DirectX 11.1 and OpenGL 4, they can also use OpenCL 1.2. The new chips can handle a 3-screen collage mode and users won't need dedicated video cards for large setups that consist of multiple monitors.

The company will be showcasing more of the chips' abilities at Computex in June.

Intel's next-gen processors, codenamed Haswell, will be available from June 3 in the US and June 4 in Taiwan. The initial set of Haswell processors is expected to comprise of quad-core CPUs for powering high-end laptops.
