Indians make up more than half of Truecaller's user base of 250 million; active users cross 90 million
Truecaller spokespersons told TechCrunch that the Truecaller app is nearing the 100 million active user mark.
Truecaller is ubiquitous in India. Whether it’s the incessant spam calls or the difficulty of keeping track of our friends’ ever-changing numbers, Truecaller is very popular.Bearing that statement out are the usage stats that Truecaller has just announced. Truecaller spokespersons told TechCrunch that the Truecaller app is nearing the 100 million active user mark. They also state that of the 250 million installs so far, more than 130 million of them are from India.Interestingly, people are apparently making 500 million calls a month via Truecaller’s Truedialer and the average length of these calls is 100 seconds. TechCrunch compares this to WhatsApp’s 100 million calls from 1 billion active users, but that comparison is unfair. WhatsApp uses VoIP services for calls while Truecaller simply makes traditional calls.Regardless, the figures speak for themselves.More good news for Truecaller comes from Alan Mamedi, Truecaller’s CEO, who told TechCrunch that the company is finally making money. How? Via targeted advertising. “We don’t need external funding; we’re actually making money right now,” he said.In other news, Huawei is partnering with Truecaller to have the app pre-installed on Huawei smartphones in most of their markets, including India. Huawei and Truecaller claim that there’s no financial element involved and that the deal is a strategic one.Huawei is hoping to integrate useful third-party apps that will set it apart from the run-of-the-mill Android phones out there. The first phone with Truecaller pre-installed will be the Honor 8. More devices will follow after.
