Huawei Mate 20 Pro ties with P20 Pro by scoring a 109 in DxOMark's camera test

Just last year, in March, Huawei P20 Pro took the top spot at DxO Mark Mobile's photo tests, beating the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus in overall rankings, which was the previous top-ranking smartphone.Then came the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, which happens to be one of the most feature-packed phones you can get your hands on in the Android world in 2018 and even today.The phone had launched in October 2018, but it appeared that the DxOMark scores for the Mate 20 Pro weren't disclosed then.The reason given by the company to not disclose the overall points to the public was because the results were extremely high. Image: tech2[/caption]Now even though the Mate 20 Pro was launched after the P20 Pro, both the phones have the same overall scores of 109.Thus the Mate 20 Pro too achieved the high photo score of 114 placing it side by side to its Huawei cousin, the P20 Pro, for the top spot among smartphone cameras.The test does not take into account the Mate 20 Pro’s super-wide-angle module.DxO Mark attributes this extraordinary score to Mate 20 Pro’s still image performance.The triple-camera setup aids in capturing "images with good target exposure and a wide dynamic range". It can capture details and produce images with pleasant colours even "in almost all circumstances" which includes high-contrast situations that is a difficult space to crack.It also seems to squeeze in more detail than the P20 Pro and iPhone XS Max in high-contrast scenes.[caption id="attachment_5660701" align="alignnone" width="1280"] The Huawei Mate 20 Pro. Image: tech2[/caption]The noise levels are also said to be under control.With the 3x optical zoom lens, the Mate 20 Pro is also said to be "one of the best smartphones for zooming."But nothing is perfect and everything does have room for improvement. The Mate 20 Pro is claimed to give out an unnatural rendering of fine details and also slight colour shading towards the edges of the frame.The auto white balance system worked well in portraits in most outdoor situations, but it offered low levels of skin tone saturation in some indoor portraits.DxO Mark also mentions the loss of fine detail on faces while using the bokeh mode.[caption id="attachment_5922261" align="alignnone" width="1280"] DxOMark rating for Huawei Mate 20 Pro. Image: DxOMark[/caption]At 97 points, the Mate 20 Pro’s video score is just one point lower than the P20 Pro’s, but it still offers low noise levels, has an adapting exposure and gives out accurate white balance. As for the cons, there seems to be camera shake when recording while walking and also delivers fewer details.But the Mate 20 Pro along with P20 Pro still stands tall as DxOMark’s highest-rated smartphone with an overall score of 109.In second place is Apple’s latest flagship iPhone XS Max with 105 points. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is at third with a score of 103 points. But the real food for thought is how relevant is the DxOMark rating is when it comes to capturing images in real life?
