We are not the least bit surprised. Grand Theft Auto 5 has been announced as the best-selling game of 2013. Well considering the huge opening week collections and the rave reviews from all corners, including from us, there was never really any contest. GTA V has had a record-breaking run ever since it launched in the second half of 2013. In just three days after launch, it broke past the $1 billion mark in sales figures, the fastest game to do so. Back by strong reviews it racked up $800 million in first-day sales alone. The Take-Two Interactive published title sold a staggering 32.5 million units, the company said during the quarterly earnings call earlier. “Grand Theft Auto V finished as the best-selling video game of 2013,” an official Take-Two spokesperson said of the Rockstar developed game. They added: “To date, Grand Theft Auto V has sold-in more than 32.5 million units.” Commenting on the success and company’s quarterly numbers, Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two stated: “Take-Two’s business continued to outperform expectations significantly during the fiscal third quarter. By October, (that’s just a month after sales began) GTA V had broken seven Guinness World Records. The list included bestselling action-adventure videogame in 24 hours, bestselling videogame in 24 hours, fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion, fastest videogame to gross $1 billion, highest grossing videogame in 24 hours, highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours and most viewed trailer for an action-adventure videogame. GTA V was not the only reason for Take-Two to pop the champagne. The company was name the top video game publisher of 2013 by market research company NPD Group on the back of a solid year in terms of revenue.
