Google earns flak for messing up colours in Independence day doodle

When it comes to capturing the essence of any important and joyous occasion on the Internet, Google’s doodles are known to be more or less spot-on. But when Googlers in India woke up to their 67th Independence Day celebrations yesterday, they were in for a little disappointment. 

The corrected version of the doodle

Like it does every year, Google had readied a doodle for this occasion too, only it did not pay as much attention to the colours it used. The doodle, essentially a ribbon forming the words ‘Google’, was to bear the colours on the Indian national flag – saffron, white and green. Now, while the white and green was in place, Google messed up the saffron – the colour on the doodle was yellow instead.

Google earned some flak from its viewers for its I-Day doodle. Twitter especially, witnessed a thick flow of comments. Some even pointed out that the doodle was similar to Coco-Cola’s logo. One user with the handle @jainrounak tweeted, "Not sure if today's Google Doodle is for India or Coca Cola."

Realising the error, Google quickly replaced the initial doodle with a corrected one.

Google’s India-specific doodles in the past have often impressed. Its Independence Day doodle last year had been particularly brilliant. This plain but endearing doodle featured India’s national bird – the peacock.
