Gionee unveils Elife S5.5: 'World's thinnest' smartphone with octa-core CPU and 13MP camera

Chinese phone maker Gionee has unveiled its newest smartphone dubbed Elife S5.5. Now, the name doesn’t imply a 5.5-inch display, rather the company wants to highlight that it is the slimmest smartphone with a thickness of just 5.5mm. Last year, some incredibly thin phones were launched such as the Huawei Ascend P6 at 6.16mm and Vivo X3 at 5.75 mm, and now the new Gionee smartphone takes a step further by breaking the 5.75mm barrier.  However, the Elife S5.5 isn’t just about uber-portability; it packs in a 5-inch full HD Super AMOLED display, and will be powered by an octa-core 1.7 GHz processor. The chipset is yet unspecified. On the camera front, the device gets a 13-megapixel rear snapper and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. Just like all other Gionee phones, it runs on company’s Amigo OS, a heavily skinned version of Android. The company hasn’t mentioned which version of the OS it will employ though. The smartphone supports 3G network working in six different bands and the company also plans to churn out an LTE version of the device by June. The Elife S5.5 will be available in China at CNY 2,299 (approximately Rs 23,500) within a few weeks. The company is set to launch the device in 40 other countries in the second quarter. So, far, Gionee handsets have been targeting emerging markets including India and we expect the S5.5 to reach here too.
