German Boffins Transfer Data at a Whopping 26Tbps

Scientists at Germany’s Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have done the impossible. However clichéd that may sound, it probably is the most apt way to describe the feat that a group of German scientists have pulled off.

The scientists managed to send data at a staggering 26 terabits per second over an optical fiber using a single laser. To prove the same, the researchers carried out a demonstration during which they were able to send the equivalent of 200,000 high-resolution images across a distance of 50 kilometers in the matter of a second. The scientists had employed a single laser and then created frequency combs, which are basically a swathe of pulses.

The technology is now being increasingly looked at the most effective platform for cloud computing, 3D HD television, among other applications for the very reason that these services are known for their immensely high bandwidth consumption rates.
