Firefox OS gets first update ahead of second launch phase

Mozilla’s HTML5-based open mobile platform Firefox OS, viewed as a low-cost alternative to Android, Windows Phone and iOS, is going to be launched in more markets soon. New hardware running the OS is also in the pipeline, according to an official post by Mozilla. The company did not specify which new markets the devices will come in, though. Phones running the OS are currently available through carriers in Colombia, Venezuela, Spain and Poland.

All the new phones, according to same announcement, will be coming with the updated version of Firefox OS 1.1. While talking about this, Mozilla said, “Individual partners will announce specifics about upcoming launches in each market.” The updated OS comes with performance improvements like better app load times and smoother scrolling, support for new languages, with the total number now standing at over 15, support for MMS, a push notification API and a lot more. The first phone with the Firefox OS, the ZTE Open, was first seen debuting in Spain back in July. Hon Hai, also known as Foxconn, had also, at the time, said that it would launch a host of products running the OS, including smartphones, tablets, TVs, electronic whiteboards and outdoor displays. The company was reported to already have more than five devices already in development.

Mozilla is pushing the second round of market launches as proof that there is demand for its new OS. The claims, however, have not yet been back by any sales data. So far, the company has named a few markets where it is planning to take its new OS before the end of the year. The list includes countries like Germany, Greece, Hungary, Serbia and Montenegro. Other markets will be announced with the second phase of launch, although there is still no mention whether India will make it to this list or not.
