Facebook Gets Involved into an 'Open Compute Project'

Facebook, the popular social networking medium has announced its intentions of involving itself in what it calls an ‘open compute project’. Furthering its plans, Facebook has gone ahead and teamed up with some of the best names in the business. Hewlett Packard, AMD and Intel will work together with Facebook to put together this project.

Towards better services

Looking forward to more power-efficient computers, Facebook would specifically aim towards offering specifications and designs that ease the task of internet services functioning on them. This move, Facebook believes will generate the availability and demand of such specialized servers. Dell, a known IT company, along with Synnex Corp. will look after building the servers and vendor functions, respectively for this project.

This move by Facebook seems to make a lot of sense, especially if the current set-up of the platform were to be taken into consideration. Facebook, at present, boasts of having over 500 million subscribers who use the medium to network, share media, among others. In such a scenario, the need of having a power-efficient server seems to a good call.
