Egypt Disconnects the Internet and Cellphones, Country Plunges into Chaos

In what is a move unlike any made before, the Egypt Government has supposedly blacked out nearly all of the country’s internet access and ordered cell phone operators to cease operations in certain areas.

This move was reportedly in response to the growing civil unrest in the country, which was further escalated by information spread on the internet and via videos on sites such as Youtube. According to Renesys, there’s been an absolutely massive drop in web traffic from and going into Egypt. Four of the country’s biggest ISPs have been completely cut off from the rest of the world by way of shutting off the country’s access points to the world wide web.

Connection timed out

Vodafone, in a statement on their website, confirmed that cellphone operators have also been ordered to stop providing their services in certain areas, and that they’re “obliged to comply with it (the order)”.

There have been reports of protests and riots throughout the country and a huge outcry over this move the world over, with several world leaders coming out in support of the citizens’ freedom of expression. I’m the same in hoping this situation gets resolved soon.
