Adobe disables Creative Cloud file sync desktop preview to update server

Adobe has announced on its blog that it will be suspending its cloud-based feature – file sync desktop preview – in order to facilitate the company's transition to offering its entire Creative Suite through the cloud. The Adobe blog reads: "We plan to bring it back online prior to release, in order to allow additional testing." Only the desktop version of file sync preview has been disabled, and those who use it on the mobile aren't affected in any way.

The perils of depending too much on the cloud

This won’t stop you from accessing files saved on the Creative Cloud or working on any files you have synced to the cloud but stored locally. The problem is that changes to local files will not be automatically synced to the Creative Cloud while the file sync preview feature is offline. You can, however, still manually upload and download files to and from the website.

The reason for the downtime is because the company is updating its server APIs and the code that manages file sync. This is being done because Adobe plans to launch the fully-integrated version of its Creative Cloud desktop application. The company had originally planned to bring about the API update next week, but some updates last week have caused instability in the service.

Earlier this month, Adobe had announced that upgrades to its flagship software package, which includes the ever-popular Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash, will soon be available only through a paid online subscription model. Subscription models bring in less money upfront, as payment is spread over the entire period of use unlike traditional packaged software, but typically ensure more predictable recurring revenue.
