Microsoft joins Mayo Clinic in push to create a healthcare-first AI model
With millions relying on AI chatbots for medical advice, concerns over inaccurate recommendations continue to grow. Microsoft and Mayo Clinic are now developing a specialised healthcare AI model trained on clinical expertise, research and anonymised patient data, aiming to create safer and more reliable tools for both doctors and patients.

Ever since artificial intelligence entered the mainstream, more people have begun turning to chatbots for medical advice. What starts as a simple query about a headache or persistent cough often leads to discussions about diagnoses, treatments and even medication recommendations.
In some cases, users have become confident enough to follow advice generated by AI systems without consulting a healthcare professional. But experts have repeatedly warned that relying on general-purpose chatbots for medical guidance can be risky, with inaccurate information potentially leading to serious consequences.
It is a challenge that Microsoft and Mayo Clinic are now hoping to address through a new long-term partnership focused on building a healthcare-specific AI model. Unlike conventional chatbots trained on vast amounts of internet content, the new system will be developed using medical research, clinical knowledge, anonymised patient data and the expertise of Mayo Clinic's physicians and specialists.
The project, announced at Microsoft's Build developer conference, reflects a growing belief that healthcare requires AI systems designed specifically for the medical field rather than tools built to answer every type of question imaginable.
Building AI with medicine at its core
At the centre of the initiative is the idea that high-quality healthcare information should come from trusted medical sources. While mainstream AI models draw knowledge from a broad mix of websites, articles and public data, the Microsoft-Mayo Clinic model will be trained using healthcare-focused datasets and real-world clinical expertise.
Mayo Clinic CEO Gianrico Farrugia said the collaboration brings together the right combination of medical knowledge, technology and data needed to create meaningful healthcare applications. According to him, the ultimate goal is not simply to build another chatbot, but to create tools capable of supporting better health outcomes.
Mayo Clinic will retain ownership of the model, while Microsoft will contribute its AI development capabilities and cloud infrastructure. Together, the organisations plan to explore how the technology can be used across different healthcare settings.
Potential applications include AI-powered tools that help clinicians access relevant information more efficiently and support decision-making during patient care. The organisations are also exploring a patient-facing assistant that could be integrated into Mayo Clinic's online services.
Such a system could help patients better understand a diagnosis, clarify treatment plans, learn about preventive care or receive answers to questions that often arise between doctor visits.
A race to improve healthcare AI
The announcement comes as technology companies increasingly push into healthcare, one of the most promising yet challenging areas for artificial intelligence. Google, OpenAI and Anthropic have all introduced health-related AI features, betting that users will continue seeking medical information through conversational tools.
However, accuracy remains a major concern. Mayo Clinic itself has previously highlighted the limitations of general-purpose AI systems when handling medical queries. In healthcare, even small mistakes can have significant consequences.
Microsoft AI chief executive Mustafa Suleyman acknowledged that creating a dependable healthcare model will not happen quickly. He said the project is expected to take years of training, testing and refinement before it reaches the level of reliability required for broader use.
The first versions of the model will be made available to Mayo Clinic professionals, who will evaluate its performance and identify areas for improvement before any wider rollout takes place.
Mayo Clinic has already developed smaller AI systems for tasks such as identifying heart disease and assisting with pancreatic cancer diagnosis. The new collaboration builds on that experience while leveraging Microsoft's expertise in artificial intelligence and large-scale computing.
Neither company has revealed how much they are investing in the initiative, although both describe it as a significant long-term commitment.
As AI continues to find its way into healthcare, Microsoft and Mayo Clinic believe specialised models could help bridge the gap between technological capability and medical trust. While concerns around AI-generated health advice remain, the two organisations are betting that a model built by healthcare experts, rather than the broader internet, could offer a safer path forward.
