Meta AI’s next big step: Alexandr Wang explains why health could be its answer to beat OpenAI and Google
As OpenAI, Anthropic and Google race to build smarter AI, Meta appears to be betting on a different advantage. According to Meta AI CEO Alexandr Wang, health-related capabilities could become a defining feature of the company’s future models, signalling a strategic shift with far-reaching implications for billions of users.

Meta’s artificial intelligence ambitions may be heading in a direction that sets it apart from rivals. While much of the industry is focused on building increasingly capable general-purpose AI systems, Meta’s AI leader, Alexandr Wang, has indicated that healthcare and wellbeing could become a central pillar of the company’s long-term strategy.
Speaking at the Bloomberg Tech conference in San Francisco, Wang offered one of the clearest indications yet of how Meta plans to distinguish itself in an increasingly crowded AI landscape dominated by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini. Rather than solely competing on benchmark scores and reasoning capabilities, Meta appears to be exploring how AI can deliver practical value in areas that affect everyday lives.
Wang, who joined Meta after the company’s multi-billion-dollar investment in Scale AI in 2025, now heads Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), the division tasked with driving the company’s next phase of AI development. His remarks provide an early glimpse into the priorities shaping Meta’s future models.
A healthcare-first vision for AI
According to Wang, healthcare has emerged as one of the most promising areas for Meta’s latest AI efforts. He suggested that as AI systems become more powerful and reach larger audiences, health-related applications will become increasingly important.
The comments come only months after Meta introduced Muse Spark, the first major AI model unveiled under the company’s restructured AI programme. While the model has not yet reached the performance levels associated with leading frontier systems, Wang said its internal results exceeded expectations.
He acknowledged that Muse Spark still trails top competitors in several areas, but stressed that the company views the current version as an important step rather than the final destination. Future iterations, he suggested, are expected to become significantly more capable.
For Meta, the appeal of healthcare-focused AI is clear. The company already operates some of the world’s largest digital platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Integrating health-oriented AI features into products used by billions could potentially create a unique competitive advantage that extends beyond traditional chatbot experiences.
The opportunity and the risks
Healthcare has rapidly become one of the most closely watched sectors in the AI industry. Technology companies increasingly see opportunities to help users access information, manage wellness goals and better understand health-related concerns.
Yet the sector also presents significant challenges. Errors, misinformation and safety risks carry far greater consequences in healthcare than in many other consumer applications.
Wang revealed that Muse Spark triggered concerns related to biological risks during its development process. Although he did not elaborate on the specific issues identified, he said Meta implemented measures to address those concerns before the model was released.
Those findings also played a role in a notable decision: Meta chose not to release Muse Spark as an open-source model. The move marks a departure from the company’s broader strategy of making many of its AI technologies publicly available to developers and researchers.
The decision highlights a growing debate across the AI industry. As models become more capable, companies are increasingly weighing the benefits of openness against the potential dangers of misuse.
For Meta, the message appears clear. The company is not just trying to build a smarter AI assistant. It is attempting to position itself at the intersection of artificial intelligence and healthcare, a space that could ultimately become one of the most influential and commercially valuable frontiers in the technology industry.
