IBM chooses Amaravati for one of India's first quantum computers, drawn by India's talent pool
IBM has confirmed Amaravati will host one of India's first quantum computers, boosting the state's ambitions to become a quantum technology hub.

IBM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Arvind Krishna has confirmed that Amaravati will host one of the first two IBM quantum computers to be established in India. Speaking at an event in the US, Krishna said the quantum computing revolution is approaching a major turning point.
The official press release read "In a major boost to Andhra Pradesh's ambition of becoming India's Quantum Capital, IBM Chairman & CEO Arvind Krishna has confirmed that Amaravati will host one of the first two IBM Quantum Computers to be established in India, with commissioning targeted by September 2026," the official press release said.

The announcement marks a significant milestone for Quantum Valley, Amaravati—the state's initiative to build a thriving quantum innovation ecosystem by bringing together the government, industry, academia, and startups.
With the establishment of one of IBM's first quantum computers in the country, Amaravati is set to emerge at the forefront of India's quantum technology ecosystem, providing researchers, startups, and enterprises with access to advanced quantum computing infrastructure.
Why IBM Chose Amaravati
Explaining why Amaravati was selected to host one of IBM's next-generation quantum computers, Krishna said the decision was driven by India's deep pool of mathematics and physics talent, which is well-positioned to develop quantum computing applications for global use.
Before the latest announcement, the technology giant had formally unveiled Quantum Valley at the inaugural Quantum Valley Tech Park Summit in Amaravati. As part of the initiative, the Andhra Pradesh government announced plans to establish a dedicated quantum computing campus and signed partnership agreements with industry leaders and academic institutions to accelerate research, innovation, and talent development.
The state has also unveiled plans to build India's first integrated quantum ecosystem by bringing together global technology firms, universities, researchers, and startups. The initiative will focus on advancing quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing, and their commercial applications. As part of this vision, the IBM quantum computer has been identified as a cornerstone of the project, with Amaravati set to become one of the first locations in the country to house such advanced quantum computing infrastructure.
