A newly viral clip initially seemed destined to join the growing collection of amusing robot videos, where machines attempt impressive manoeuvres only to stumble or collapse moments later.
Instead, the footage took a more unsettling turn.
During a live demonstration, a humanoid robot accidentally struck a child in the stomach while performing a sequence of movements. The moment quickly spread across social media, drawing reactions ranging from concern to dark humour.
Judging by the child's immediate response, the impact appeared significant enough to cause discomfort. What caught many viewers' attention, however, was not just the accidental kick but what happened next. The footage shows a remotely operated humanoid robot, recognisable by its bright blue wig, moving through a demonstration routine in front of a crowd. As it swings one of its legs, the robot appears to accidentally strike a young boy standing nearby in the stomach.
The child immediately reacts to the impact while the robot pauses briefly before continuing. The clip has since gained widespread attention online, generating thousands of comments and sparking fresh debate over the growing presence of humanoid robots in public spaces.
The footage has sparked fresh debate over AI-powered machines, with several netizens drawing comparisons to the Hollywood sci-fi franchise Terminator.




Humanoids in China and South Korea are getting better
China is not only accelerating the development of humanoid robots but is also attempting to build a framework for regulating and tracking them.
The country recently unveiled a nationwide initiative designed to assign every domestically produced humanoid robot a unique digital identity. The programme aims to establish common industry standards while enabling authorities to monitor robots throughout their operational lifespan.
According to state broadcaster CCTV, the initiative, known as the Humanoid Full Lifecycle Management Service Platform, will track robots from manufacturing and deployment through to eventual retirement and recycling.
The project is being overseen by the Humanoid Robotics and Embodied Intelligence Standardisation Committee under China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. More than 100 domestic manufacturers have already joined the programme, with over 28,000 robots across roughly 200 models receiving digital identification codes.
Industry analysts believe the move reflects China's ambition to become a global leader in humanoid robotics, a sector that has expanded rapidly in recent years.
South Korea is also embracing the technology in increasingly creative ways.
Earlier this week, humanoid robots stepped away from research facilities and onto a fashion runway in Seoul as part of a futuristic showcase organised by Galaxy Corporation.
The robots appeared alongside human models, walking in synchronised formations beneath bright lights and flashing cameras. Although significantly smaller than their human counterparts, the machines mirrored movements and poses with surprising precision, creating scenes reminiscent of children accompanying adult models during major fashion events.
The runway segment was only part of the spectacle.
Visitors also witnessed choreographed dance performances, interactive stage shows and even a robot boxing contest. In the boxing arena, attendees were able to control humanoid robots using a mirroring system that translated human movements into real-time robotic actions.
US in humanoids race
While China continues to expand its presence in robotics and artificial intelligence, concerns are growing in the United States about maintaining technological competitiveness.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently highlighted China's rapid progress across several advanced industries, including renewable energy, AI and robotics. Sharing data on the country's accelerating deployment of clean energy infrastructure, Musk warned that the US risks falling behind if it fails to keep pace.
His concerns extend beyond environmental technologies.
Speaking during a recent Tesla earnings call, Musk predicted that China could soon become the dominant force in the global humanoid robot industry.
"China is exceptionally good at scaling, manufacturing and AI," Musk said. "I think China will be by far the biggest competitor in the humanoid robot market."
While Musk maintains that Tesla's Optimus robot currently holds a leading position, he believes the strongest future challengers are likely to emerge from China.
Last year, he remarked that although Tesla and SpaceX remained at the forefront of technological innovation, he expected many of the world's next-largest robotics companies to be Chinese.
As humanoid robots become more capable, incidents such as the one in Xinjiang are likely to draw increasing scrutiny, particularly as these machines begin operating closer to the public. For many viewers, the viral clip was simply an accident. For others, it served as a reminder of how rapidly humanoid technology is evolving.
