Razer's stolen Project Valerie laptops show up on Chinese listing site for $21,700

Razer’s stolen triple monitor, Project Valerie laptops briefly popped up on a Chinese e-commerce portal for a whopping $21,700.The laptops were reported stolen soon after CES 2017. Razer co-founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan took to social media to express his disappointment, where he stated, “At Razer, we play hard and we play fair. Our teams worked months on end to conceptualise and develop these units and we pride ourselves in pushing the envelope to deliver the latest and greatest.” He called the thievery “industrial espionage” and “cheating” and offered a reward of $25,000 to anyone who could offer information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible.The laptops are a triple-screen prototype that Razer demoed at its booth at CES. The prototypes won multiple accolades from various publications, including ours, for its design and concept.The prototype boasted of three, 17-inch 4K displays of IGZO panel technology. The displays were also Nvidia G-Sync compatible. With a combined resolution of 11520x2160 to push, the laptop requires enormous processing power. To that end, Razer kitted the prototype with an Nvidia 1080 GPU with 8GB of GDDR5 RAM, 32GB of RAM and an Intel i7 6700 CPU. The entire rig was cooled by a vapour chamber system and Razer hinted at a possible price tag of $6,000.Two prototypes were stolen on 8 January and yesterday, showed up on Chinese auction site TaoBao at an initial listing price of around $21,700, reports TweakTown. The listing has since been pulled down, but hopefully, authorities will be able to use the metadata from the listing to pin down the perpetrators.
