Bharat Bodh AI Conclave: IIT-B & Columbia University forge strategic partnership for industrial AI innovation

The landscape of industrial innovation in India has received a significant boost with a new international partnership forged at the Bharat Bodhan AI Conclave 2026. During the inaugural ceremony at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, a landmark memorandum of understanding was signed between the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and Columbia University.

This agreement, witnessed by the Union Minister of Education, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, formalises the creation of the Columbia–IIT Bombay Center of AI for Manufacturing. The initiative represents a strategic bridge between two world class academic institutions, aimed at harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to revolutionise the factory floor and enhance India’s standing as a global manufacturing hub.

A vision for human centric industrial intelligence

The primary objective of this new facility is to function as a specialised hub for both research and the practical translation of technology. Rather than focusing solely on theoretical models, the centre is dedicated to creating artificial intelligence systems that are robust and capable of scaling across various industrial sectors.

Crucially, the partnership emphasizes a human centric approach, ensuring that technology serves to augment human capability rather than replace it. By focusing on real world applications, the centre aims to solve complex logistical and production challenges, thereby strengthening the indigenous innovation ecosystem. This move aligns with broader national goals to foster deeper collaboration between academic researchers and industry leaders.

Strategic diplomatic and academic leadership

The establishment of this centre was the result of extensive coordination, supported heavily by the Embassy of India in Washington DC and the Consulate General of India in New York. The signing ceremony featured high level delegations from both universities, led by the Director of IIT Bombay, Professor Shireesh Kedare, and the Senior Vice Provost of Columbia University, Professor Soulaymane Kachani.

The intellectual architecture of the project is guided by Professor Vishal Misra from Columbia Engineering and Professor Mani Bhushan from the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Bombay. Their presence underscores the multidisciplinary nature of the project, merging computing expertise with chemical and process engineering to address the nuanced needs of modern manufacturing.

Expanding the horizons of national AI research

This collaboration marks the fourth major AI centre initiated by the Ministry of Education, reflecting a sustained commitment to technological advancement. While the previous centres have focused on various niches of digital transformation, this joint venture specifically targets the manufacturing sector to drive immediate economic impact.

The initiative has already garnered significant interest from the private sector, with several major industry partners currently in the process of joining the consortium. This influx of corporate support is expected to provide the necessary data and testing grounds to move AI solutions from the laboratory to the production line, ensuring that the research results in tangible improvements for the Indian economy.
