This is one of the simplest and most accurate methods because the information comes directly from government records. The portal is regularly updated and ensures transparency for both new and used vehicle owners.

Looking at the registration certificate

In several states, the registration certificate or RC of a vehicle clearly mentions whether it is BS IV or BS VI compliant. This document, issued by the Regional Transport Office, acts as an official proof of ownership and carries important details about the vehicle. If your RC is printed in the recent digital format, you will likely see “BS VI” or “BS IV” written under the emission or fuel section. In case the printed version does not display it, you can also check the digital RC available on the mParivahan mobile application, which draws its data from the same government database.

Verifying the manufacturing date

Another reliable method to determine your vehicle’s emission standard is to check when it was manufactured. India adopted the BS VI norms nationwide from April 2020 onwards. Therefore, any vehicle produced after this date is automatically BS VI compliant. The manufacturing month and year are often displayed on a metal plate fixed inside the engine bay, near the driver’s door, or mentioned in the owner’s manual. Vehicles produced before 2020 would typically follow BS IV norms, unless specifically certified otherwise.
