A crucial 2025 meeting helped put Apple intelligence and Siri back on track: Report

Apple's WWDC keynote, scheduled for tomorrow, is expected to be heavily focused on artificial intelligence. The event could help the company regain momentum in an increasingly crowded market dominated by AI chatbots and digital assistants. Over the past year, a delayed Siri overhaul and a lukewarm reception to Apple Intelligence have prevented the Cupertino-based tech giant from establishing a clear leadership position in the AI race.

According to the latest Power On newsletter, Apple was forced to restructure parts of its internal management and AI teams following a high-stakes meeting held in early 2025 to upgrade its Ai developments. The report describes the gathering as a major inflection point that reshaped the company's AI strategy and long-term priorities.

The Big AI Meeting That Changed Apple's Course

The meeting reportedly took place after Apple realized it was falling behind in the rapidly evolving AI landscape while competitors continued to move at a much faster pace. Senior executives gathered in a conference room near the software engineering division to discuss how the company could reposition itself and remain competitive.

Gurman reports that CEO Tim Cook was not present at the meeting. However, several top executives attended, including former Human Interface Design chief Alan Dye and Apple Vision Products Group head Mike Rockwell. The discussion centered on Apple's AI challenges and the delayed Siri revamp. Team leaders reportedly recognized the severity of the situation and concluded that decisive action was necessary to prevent the company from falling further behind.

Software chief Craig Federighi led much of the discussion, while Rockwell was tasked with helping address Apple's AI and Siri-related shortcomings. Even then, progress on Siri remained slow, as some senior executives were reportedly hesitant to fully embrace the proposed roadmap.

The decision to revamp Siri also left Apple searching for additional leadership for its AI models. After an extended search, Amar Subramanya was selected as a key figure to help oversee the company's AI efforts.

As Apple struggled to catch up with rivals, Rockwell reportedly began exploring external solutions to accelerate development. This eventually led to Apple's initial agreement with Google to leverage Gemini models and Google Cloud infrastructure to help jump-start the development of Apple's next-generation Foundation Models.

The report further states that Cook became increasingly hands-on with Apple's AI strategy following the meeting. As the company worked to implement new AI features, he reportedly shifted his view of artificial intelligence from a supplementary technology to a core pillar of future operating system upgrades.

In hindsight, the meeting appears to have been a turning point for Apple, laying the groundwork for the company's renewed AI ambitions and potentially preventing it from falling further behind in one of the technology industry's most important battles.
