Who is Ishank Singh? Seven-year-old Indian swimmer sets world record with 29-km swim across Palk Strait

Ishank Singh made history by completing the arduous open‑water swim across the Palk Strait between India and Sri Lanka. The seven-year-old Indian swimmer's accomplishment stands out, as achieving such a triumph at an early age is no easy feat.

The Palk Strait is a waterway that separates India's Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka's Jaffna district and connects the Bay of Bengal with the Gulf of Mannar. Ishank displayed his intent and perseverance by completing the 29-km-long swim through the strait.

Ishank swam through the 29-km Palk Strait, completing the challenging open-water swim from Sri Lanka's Talaimannar to Tamil Nadu's Dhanushkodi. He completed the endurance swim on Thursday, 30 April, and took approximately 9 hours and 50 minutes, displaying his unmatched determination and grit.

The Universal Records Forum recognised the seven-year-old as the youngest and fastest swimmer to cross the Palk Strait. Tamil Nadu's Jay Jashwanth previously held the record after completing the swim at age ten in 10 hours and 30 minutes in 2019.

Who is Ishank Singh?

Ishank is a swimming prodigy from Dhurwa in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. He is a student at the DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shyamali, and studies in Class Three.

According to reports, the seven-year-old swimmer trained for four to five hours every day at the Dhurwa Dam in Ranchi. He trained under coaches Aman Kumar Jaiswal and Bajrang Kumar and followed a strict plan to enhance stamina for the endurance swim.

The young swimmer received immense praise after completing the record-breaking swim, with Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren congratulating him for his triumph. He further expressed that Ishank brought pride to not just Jharkhand, but the entire nation, calling his success "a remarkable example of discipline and unwavering dedication to his goal."

Ishank's school principal also expressed delight over the historic achievement and highlighted that his success would inspire other students.
