FIDE opens bidding for Gukesh vs Sindarov World Championship match; provisional dates revealed

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has officially opened the bidding process to host the 2026 World Chess Championship match between reigning champion D Gukesh and challenger Javokhir Sindarov.

FIDE made the announcement on Thursday, confirming that the highly anticipated title clash is provisionally scheduled to take place between November 23 and December 17, 2026. The governing body also invited interested parties to submit their bids to host what is considered the biggest event in the chess calendar.

FIDE also shared key details regarding the organisation of the event. The championship is expected to run for around 25 days, with final regulations set to be approved by July 1, 2026. The governing body has estimated a total budget of USD 8.5 million (Rs 80 crore), with a minimum prize fund of USD 2.5 million (Rs 23 crore).

Who has the edge in Gukesh vs Sindarov?

The upcoming match is set to be historic, as it will be the youngest-ever World Championship clash. Both Gukesh and Sindarov will be 20 years old when the match takes place later this year.

Gukesh enters the contest as the reigning world champion, having created history by defeating Ding Liren in 2024 to become the youngest player to win the title at the age of 18. On the other hand, Sindarov secured his spot as challenger after a dominant performance in the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament earlier this month.

Despite being the defending champion, Gukesh has struggled to maintain the same level of form after his historic win. He did not win a single major title in 2025, and his inconsistent performances have continued into 2026. He has even announced a break from long-form chess to focus more on training ahead of the world title match.

Meanwhile, Sindarov has seen his stakes significantly rise over the past few months. He won the 2025 FIDE Chess World Cup in Goa to qualify for the Candidates and dominated the tournament in Cyprus as well to book a spot in the World Championship clash.
