Why didn't PV Sindhu play in India's crucial Uber Cup encounter against Ukraine

The Indian national badminton team produced a dominant performance against Ukraine in their second Group A match of the Uber Cup Finals 2026 in Horsens on Saturday. However, one major talking point was the absence of star shuttler PV Sindhu from the lineup.

India had gone into this match under pressure after losing their opening tie 2-3 against hosts Denmark. With only the top two teams from the group qualifying for the quarterfinals, the Ukraine clash was almost a must-win game for the Indian team. However, Sindhu did not play the encounter.

Why didn't Sindhu play against Ukraine?

Sindhu had an intense outing in the Denmark tie, where she played two high-pressure matches in a short span. The two-time Olympic medallist had given everything on court, winning her singles match before also partnering in doubles with Tanisha Crasto to give India a consolation victory.

“Two matches in two hours. Must-win tie. And my body politely reminding me I’m not 19 anymore,” Sindhu posted on X and Instagram after the match.

She finally got the rest she needed, as India delivered a strong performance in her absence. Unnati Hooda, Tanvi Sharma, and Devika Sihag all won their singles matches to seal a 3-0 victory, with the doubles matches not required. Sindhu was paired in the doubles game along with Castro, but the 3-0 win meant she could rest.

India’s win has kept their quarterfinal hopes alive. However, their toughest test is still ahead, as they are set to face strong contenders China in their final group match on Sunday, which will decide their fate in the tournament.
