Paris Paralympics 2024: Nithya Sre wins women's singles SH6 bronze, India's fifth badminton medal

The Indian para-badminton team in the Paris Paralympics signed off with a fifth medal with Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan winning bronze in the women's singles SH6 category late on Monday.

Nithya pulled off a comfortable victory over Indonesia's Rina Marlina in straight games (21-14, 21-6) in the bronze medal playoff.

The 19-year-old para-shuttler's bronze  took India's medal count in the Paris Games to 15, just four shy of their haul in the Tokyo Games three years ago that is their biggest ever in the Paralympics.

The Indian badminton team thus finished with five medals — a gold, two silvers and as many bronzes, including Nithya's.

Nitesh Kumar won gold in the men's singles SL3 category, defeating Great Britain's Daniel Bethell 21-14, 18-21, 23-21. However, Suhas Yathiraj and Thulasimathi Murugesan lost their respective gold medal matches in the men's singles SL4 and women's singles SU5 categories.

Also standing on the women's singles SU5 podium was Manisha Ramadass, who defeated Denmark's Catherine Rosengren 21-12, 21-8.

India had won four medals in the Tokyo Paralympics, with Pramod Bhagat (SL3) and Krishna Nagar (SH6) winning gold and Manoj Sarkar (SL3). Yathiraj had won silver in Tokyo and would produce an encore three years later in Paris as well, incidentally against the same opponent.
