The BWF had tested the new format in 2025 at select Grade 3 tournaments like the World Junior Championships and the National Championships.

The federation president Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul has emphasised that they are building a sport that communicates with the upcoming generation and intends to invest in players' long-term futures. The new format will allow matches to be shortened, and thus players will be able to extend their careers.

"We are building a sport that speaks to the next generation, while continuing to invest in the long‑term future of our players. The 3×15 scoring system is intended to deliver more exciting and competitive badminton, improved scheduling, more consistent match durations, and potential benefits for player welfare and recovery," Leeswadtrakul said in a statement.

The BWF added that the new format intends to ease pressure and load off players, decrease the chances of injuries, and give more time for recovery.

What is the 3x15 format?

As per the 3x15 format, matches will continue in the best-of-three format, but the games will be limited to 15 points. Once the score is at 14-14, a player or doubles pair must bag a two-point lead to win the game.

The game's intervals have also been altered, with mid-game breaks now happening at eight points instead of 11. Additionally, the player would have to change sides after reaching eight points.

The changes would shorten match time and foster a fast-paced and much more intense playing experience.

"By bringing high‑pressure moments earlier and creating tighter scores and more dramatic finishes, the format aims to keep fans engaged from the first rally to the last," Leeswadtrakul added.

The new 3x15 best-of-three format will come into effect from January 2027.
