Your summer just got deadlier, and the ocean is to blame

A new study confirms what millions across South Asia have felt in their bones: the warming ocean is now dictating life on land.

Somewhere between April and May in most Indian cities, the heat starts feeling like a bit of a punishment. The air doesn't move. Sweat soaks through clothes but offers no cooling — it just sits there, warm and useless. You feel it most in the chest, a kind of breathless, pressing weight that has nothing to do with exertion. Doctors call what follows heat exhaustion, then heatstroke. The body's thermostat breaks down, and people die.

Scientists have been trying to get precise about this experience for years. The measure they keep returning to is wet bulb temperature — a reading that captures both heat and humidity together, as the human body actually experiences them. Around 31.5 degrees Celsius wet bulb, sweating stops working. Spend long enough above that threshold and you are in serious danger, no matter how young or healthy you are.

A new study finds that the Indian Ocean — warming faster than most bodies of water on Earth is a primary driver of exactly these conditions across South Asia and West Asia. Warming ocean waters are responsible for 50 to 64 percent of the increase in land heatwaves globally, the researchers found, drawing on four decades of climate data between 1982 and 2023.

In tropical regions, oceans supply moisture to the atmosphere which is then transported inland, amplifying heat. The warmer the water, the more moisture it pushes upward, and the further that humid air travels before it breaks. For coastal populations this has always been true to some degree — anyone who has spent a July in Mumbai or Chennai knows that the sea is not a relief from the heat but a contributor to it. What the study maps is how far inland that influence now reaches, and how much more intense it has become.

Lead author Fenying Cai of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research describes a strong link between warming coastal waters and clustered hot, humid extreme events, particularly across the tropics. Further from the equator, combined land-ocean warming linked to large-scale atmospheric wave patterns also plays an important role. However, across South Asia, the Indian Ocean is the hinge. Rather than examining individual heatwave events in isolation, the researchers used a complex network approach — mapping relationships between ocean temperature changes and land heat events across the whole system simultaneously.

It is closer to how epidemiologists trace contagion through a population than how weather forecasters think about a single storm.

What 2023 should have taught us

The summer of 2023 cracked something open in public awareness. Record-breaking sea surface temperatures in the North Atlantic drove widespread heatwaves across southern South America. In Asia, the numbers were historic across almost every metric. In India, the season felt qualitatively different — longer, stickier, harder to escape. What made it worse, and what often goes unreported, is that India's official heatwave declarations don't measure what people were actually experiencing.

The India Meteorological Department's thresholds are based on dry bulb temperature, without accounting for humidity. Many Indians may be experiencing heatwaves without knowing it, which is exactly where wet bulb temperature becomes relevant.

The gap between official record and physical reality is not a rounding error — it is the difference between a government issuing warnings and a government staying silent while people collapse. The average duration of heatwaves in India has increased by 6.5 days across seven decades, from 1961 to 2021. That figure understates the shift for anyone measuring by wet bulb rather than dry.

The backdrop is an ocean in sustained crisis. In 2025, the ocean absorbed an additional 23 zettajoules of heat energy, breaking the ocean heat content record for the ninth consecutive year — the equivalent of 12 Hiroshima bombs detonating in the ocean every second.

The hottest ocean regions included the tropical and South Atlantic, the Mediterranean, the North Indian Ocean, and the Southern Ocean. The North Indian Ocean sits at the top of that list by consequence — the body of water most directly connected to the lives of the most heat-vulnerable people on the planet.

The political question nobody is asking

Co-author Jürgen Kurths points to one finding with immediate practical value: coastal sea surface temperatures may serve as an early warning indicator for widespread humid heat extremes. If ocean warming reliably precedes clustering of heatwave conditions on land, governments could use sea surface monitoring to issue warnings weeks ahead — time enough to open cooling centres, prepare hospitals, protect the most exposed. Global warming has already led to a threefold increase in the number of days per year when ocean surfaces experience extreme heat conditions. The data is not lacking.

A flood photographs well. A heatwave leaves no visible wreckage — only hospital admissions, excess mortality statistics, agricultural losses that take months to tally. The greatest uncertainty in the climate system is no longer the physics but the choices humanity makes.
