Why there’s a small pocket inside your jeans that still exists today

Grab almost any pair of jeans and you will find a tiny pocket tucked inside the larger front-right pocket.

It's too small for a smartphone, awkward for keys, and often ignored altogether. In fact, many even don't know about this hidden feature until they try to slide their hand in it and wonder why there's an extra pocket stitched inside another one.

Yet despite decades of changing fashion trends and technology, this miniature pocket remains a standard feature on jeans around the world. Why though? Well, the answer lies in its design.

Let's go back to the 19th century

The tiny pocket, commonly known as a "watch pocket," dates back to the earliest days of blue jeans.

In 1873, Levi Strauss and tailor Jacob Davis patented riveted work trousers designed for labourers, miners and railway workers. These hard-wearing garments would eventually become the modern blue jean.

During the late 19th century, pocket watches were an essential accessory. Wristwatches had not yet become commonplace, and workers needed a secure place to carry their timepieces without damaging them while working.

The small pocket was designed specifically to keep a pocket watch safe and protected from knocks and scratches.

According to Levi Strauss & Co., the watch pocket was part of the original design and sat above the larger front pocket for added security. The company still refers to it as the watch pocket today.

Journey from utility to tradition that lasted centuries

As wristwatches became popular in the early 20th century, the original purpose of the pocket gradually disappeared. Yet manufacturers chose not to remove it.

The reason is simple: it became part of the identity of a classic pair of jeans.

Many iconic design features survive long after their original purpose fades away. Just as decorative stitching and copper rivets remain on denim, the watch pocket endured because consumers associated it with authentic jeans. Over time, it evolved from a practical feature into a symbol of denim heritage.

Fashion historians often point out that removing the pocket would alter the traditional five-pocket jean design that has become recognised worldwide.

Here's what it is used for today

Although few people carry pocket watches anymore, the tiny pocket has found new uses over the years.

Depending on the wearer, it may hold coins, lighters, earbuds, rings and other small jewellery, USB drives, small keys, and more.

Its purpose may have changed, but its usefulness has not disappeared entirely.
