The modern yellow school bus traces its origins to the United States in 1939, when education professor Dr Frank W. Cyr organised a week-long conference at Teachers College, Columbia University.

At the time, school buses varied widely in colour, design and safety standards. Some were blue, others red or green, while many were simply repurposed trucks used to transport children.

Dr Cyr brought together educators, engineers, bus manufacturers and paint experts to establish national standards for school buses. The conference produced 44 recommendations covering everything from bus dimensions and seating to safety features and, most famously, the colour of the vehicle.

Why was yellow chosen?

The group selected a distinctive shade that was originally known as National School Bus Chrome, now officially called National School Bus Glossy Yellow.

The decision was based on visibility rather than appearance.

Yellow is among the easiest colours for the human eye to detect, particularly during the early morning and late afternoon when school buses are most commonly on the road. It also remains highly noticeable in rain, fog and other low-light conditions.

The science behind the colour

Another important reason for choosing yellow was readability.

Black lettering creates a strong contrast against the bright yellow background, making words such as "School Bus" easier to read from a distance.

During the 1939 conference, experts concluded that this combination offered excellent visibility for motorists and pedestrians alike, helping drivers identify school buses more quickly.

The colour also stands out in drivers' peripheral vision, allowing people to notice a school bus even when they are not looking directly at it.

A colour designed to protect children

The bright yellow paint serves an important purpose beyond simply making buses easy to recognise.

It acts as an immediate visual warning that children may be boarding or leaving the vehicle. Drivers instinctively associate the colour with caution, encouraging them to slow down and remain alert near school buses.

Is every country required to paint school buses yellow?

No. The famous yellow standard originated in North America, where it became widely adopted following the 1939 recommendations.

In the United States, there is no federal law requiring every school bus to be yellow, but all states have adopted the colour through their own standards and safety guidelines. Canada also uses the same distinctive shade.

In many other countries, including India, yellow has also become the preferred colour for school buses because of its strong association with safety and its high visibility, although specific regulations vary by jurisdiction.
