Which city is known as the Egg City of India?

Every region in India is known for something unique, whether it's tea, spices or mangoes. In Tamil Nadu, one town has earned a very different distinction. Namakkal is widely known as the Egg City of India, thanks to its thriving poultry industry and enormous contribution to the country's egg production.

The city produces roughly a third of Tamil Nadu's total egg output on its own. Depending on the source and season, daily production estimates range anywhere from 3 crore to over 6 crore eggs, numbers that put it well ahead of most other poultry regions in the country and, by several counts, in competition with Hyderabad for the top spot nationally.

How the industry actually got this big

The scale is relatively recent. Commercial egg farming in Namakkal only took off around three to four decades ago, starting small and largely manual before consolidating into the organised, large-scale operation it is today. The district now has an estimated 1,100-plus poultry farms housing more than 45 million layer birds, a number that's grown steadily even through periods of squeezed margins driven by rising feed costs.

Namakkal's advantage isn't just the birds; it's the infrastructure around them. The town has strong road connectivity, enough that it's earned an unofficial nickname as a "transport town," and sits close enough to India's east coast ports to make exports logistically easier than for most inland producers. Eggs from Namakkal move daily to Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and increasingly to markets in North India, with Kerala's own egg pricing reportedly tracking Namakkal's rates directly.

Why the numbers matter

The National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) uses Namakkal as one of its key benchmark markets for setting daily wholesale egg rates, meaning price movements here ripple outward to several other states. That also makes the town economically exposed. Bird flu scares, feed price spikes, and seasonal dips in demand (egg consumption in Tamil Nadu traditionally drops during the Tamil month of Purattasi, when non-vegetarian food intake falls) can all shift prices and production in ways that are felt well beyond the district itself.

It's a reminder that "Egg City of India" isn't just a quiz-show fact. It's a supply chain most of the country depends on without realising where the eggs are actually coming from.
