India’s ancient monuments are admired for their architecture, carvings and historical significance, but many of them also reveal an extraordinary understanding of astronomy, sunlight and seasonal movements.
Long before modern technology and scientific instruments, Indian architects and rulers designed temples, observatories and structures that aligned precisely with the movement of the sun and celestial bodies.
From temples illuminated during equinoxes to observatories tracking planetary positions, these monuments continue to fascinate historians, scientists and travellers alike.
Konark Sun Temple, Odisha
One of India’s most iconic architectural marvels, the Konark Sun Temple in Odisha is globally renowned for its intricate stone sculptures and astronomical symbolism. Built in the shape of a giant chariot dedicated to the Sun God, the temple is designed with seven horses and 24 elaborately carved wheels.
Each wheel measures nearly nine feet nine inches in diameter and contains eight wider spokes along with eight thinner spokes.
The arrangement of these wheels is carefully spread across the temple complex, with six wheels placed on either side of the main temple, four on each side of the Mukhasala and two on each side of the eastern staircase.
The wheels are believed to function like sundials, allowing people to estimate time through the position of shadows cast by the spokes.
Even today, the massive stone wheels remain one of the temple’s biggest attractions and continue to showcase the scientific and artistic brilliance of ancient Indian architecture.
Modhera Sun Temple, Gujarat
The Modhera Sun Temple in Gujarat stands as another striking example of India’s deep connection between architecture and astronomy. Built in 1026-27 CE during the reign of Bhima I of the Chaulukya dynasty, the temple was carefully aligned with solar movements.
The structure was designed so that the first rays of the rising sun pass directly through the temple’s main entrance and illuminate the sanctum sanctorum without creating shadows. During the summer solstice, sunlight falls directly onto the sanctum where the idol of the Sun God was once placed.
Located close to the Tropic of Cancer, the temple also captures sunlight during the equinoxes, when day and night are nearly equal across the world.
Jantar Mantar, Jaipur
Built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in the 18th century, Jantar Mantar in Jaipur remains one of the world’s most remarkable astronomical observatories.
Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the observatory houses a collection of monumental instruments designed for naked-eye astronomical observations.
The observatory includes famous instruments such as the Samrat Yantra, Jai Prakash Yantra and Narivalaya Yantra, all created for calculating time, tracking planetary movements and studying celestial positions with extraordinary precision.
Jantar Mantar is considered the largest and best-preserved collection of fixed astronomical instruments built in India during the first half of the 18th century.
Brihadeeswarar Temple, Tamil Nadu
The Brihadeeswarar Temple in Tamil Nadu, built by Raja Raja Chola I in the 11th century, is celebrated for both its architectural scale and scientific precision.
The temple’s eastern alignment allows the rising sun’s rays to fall directly onto the central Shiva lingam, creating a visually striking effect during sunrise.
Another fascinating feature is linked to the temple’s towering vimana, which rises nearly 66 metres high. The structure is often described as not casting a shadow on the ground at noon.
Scientists suggest, the tower’s shadow falls within the temple’s own footprint due to its pyramidal shape and carefully tapered design, creating the illusion that the shadow disappears.
The 16-storeyed tower also functions like a giant sundial or gnomon, designed to interact with the high vertical sun typical of Tamil Nadu’s climate.
Iron Pillar of Delhi
Delhi’s famous Iron Pillar is not only admired for its rust-resistant metallurgy but is also believed to have once functioned as an astronomical instrument.
The 1,600-year-old pillar was originally located at Udayagiri, also known as Vishnupadagiri, in present-day Madhya Pradesh during the Gupta period around 400 CE. Researchers believe the pillar was positioned to align with the summer solstice, where its morning shadow fell along a specially designed passage.
The structure is also thought to have helped map shadows and mark the Tropic of Cancer before it was eventually moved to Delhi centuries later.
