Thailand retains visa-free entry for Indians after tourism dip, but there's a catch

Thailand has decided to retain visa-free entry for Indian passport holders, reversing an earlier proposal that would have ended the exemption. However, there is one important change- Indians will now be allowed to stay in the country visa-free for up to 30 days, instead of the earlier 60-day limit.

The decision comes after Thai authorities acknowledged that uncertainty over the proposed withdrawal of visa-free access had already led to a decline in tourist arrivals from India, one of Thailand's largest tourism markets. Tourism officials said maintaining visa-free travel would better align with the travel patterns of Indian visitors while helping support the country's tourism industry.

A series of rule changes

Thailand's visa rules for Indian travellers have been changing frequently over the past few months, causing confusion among tourists.

In May, the Thai Cabinet approved a proposal to end the 60-day visa-free scheme for visitors from several countries, including India, citing concerns over misuse of the programme. However, the proposal had not been implemented, leaving travellers uncertain about the final rules.

Adding to the confusion, Thailand also introduced stricter entry requirements for visitors. In recent weeks, Indian travellers have been advised to carry proof of sufficient funds, typically 20,000 Thai baht (or equivalent), along with documents such as confirmed accommodation and return tickets, as immigration officers may ask for them at the port of entry. These financial requirements are separate from the visa exemption and remain part of Thailand's immigration checks.

What the latest rule means for Indians

Under the revised policy, Indian passport holders can continue travelling to Thailand without obtaining a tourist visa, but their stay under the visa exemption will now be limited to 30 days.

Travellers planning longer vacations, extended stays, or remote work will need to apply for the appropriate visa before travelling. Authorities have also advised visitors not to rely on the relaxed rules that existed previously and to verify the latest entry requirements before departure.

The move is expected to provide greater clarity after months of changing policies, while ensuring Thailand remains an attractive destination for Indian tourists, who continue to rank among the country's top international visitors.
