Justin and Hailey Bieber's one style rule: never dress for the same event

From a red carpet in Los Angeles to a stadium in New Jersey, the couple keep proving that matching outfits were never part of the plan, and their World Cup weekend was just the latest case study.

Justin and Hailey Bieber have built a reputation for showing up together while looking like they came from two entirely different nights out, and little about their World Cup weekend suggested that was about to change. Justin kept things low-key and streetwear-coded throughout, while Hailey went in the opposite direction at every turn, a contrast the couple have leaned into for years rather than tried to smooth over.

The pattern goes back further than one weekend

The habit was on full display at the Grammys earlier this year. Justin performed his set in little more than satin boxers and socks, later covering up with an open terrycloth hoodie and baggy jeans for photos. Hailey spent the night in considerably more polish, first in a strapless black Alaïa gown, then in a white mini dress finished with kitten heels and diamond studs.

Hailey has spoken about the dynamic before, describing their nights out as looking as though they are headed to separate events entirely: Justin content in sweats, her reaching for something shorter and dressier, with neither feeling obliged to match the other's mood.

World Cup weekend kept the streak alive

When Justin co-headlined the tournament's first halftime show at MetLife Stadium on July 19, he did it in head-to-toe pieces from Skylrk, the streetwear label he launched last year: a distressed polo, long raw-denim shorts, slouchy socks and an unreleased pair of sneakers, with even his earpiece and guitar strap carrying the brand. His one nod to the occasion was a pair of Logan Hollowell diamond studs reportedly worth close to twenty thousand dollars.

Reaction to the set itself was mixed, and the couple's dinner the following evening at The Corner Store in SoHo came across as noticeably subdued. But hours after the final whistle, the contrast returned on cue. At an afterparty hosted by Skylrk in New York, Justin changed into another oversized look, a polka-dot hoodie over a forest green tee with baggy dark jeans, while Hailey arrived in a red silk micro-mini from Christian Dior's 2005 John Galliano archive, trimmed in black lace and styled with The Row's thong sandals, a croc-embossed clutch and a terracotta-toned makeup look. Even earlier that day, arriving at the stadium in a black tank and capris while Justin wore a beanie and printed tee, the split held: comfort for him, polish for her, exactly as it tends to go.
