Hong Kong International Airport has recently unveiled its newly revamped Terminal 2, marking a significant milestone in the continued expansion of one of Asia’s busiest aviation hubs.

The upgraded facility is designed to enhance passenger handling capacity, introduce advanced digital technologies, and streamline the departure experience as travel demand across the region continues to recover and grow.

The reopening forms part of the airport’s wider three-runway system development, aimed at strengthening Hong Kong’s position as a leading international aviation gateway.

The terminal shall reopen in a phased strategy

The revamped Terminal 2 is being brought back into service in phases.

The first stage focuses primarily on departure processing functions, including check-in, baggage drop, security screening and immigration procedures.

According to official announcements, the new departure facilities began operations on May 27, 2026, aligning with the summer travel peak to manage rising passenger volumes more efficiently.

While the landside operations have resumed, full integration of airside facilities such as boarding gates and expanded concourses will follow in later phases, with passengers initially transferring to Terminal 1 for boarding.

The rebuilt Terminal 2 has been designed as a large-scale, modernised passenger hub. Spanning approximately 300,000 square metres, the terminal significantly increases processing capacity at Hong Kong International Airport.

The upgraded layout introduces multiple check-in aisles, self-service bag-drop counters, smart kiosks and redesigned passenger flow systems. These improvements are intended to reduce congestion and speed up processing times, particularly during peak travel periods.

The revamped terminal is expected to serve around 15 regional and short-haul carriers, with operations being gradually transferred in phases. These airlines primarily operate routes within Asia, helping to distribute traffic more evenly across the airport’s infrastructure.
