Here's why mosquitoes bite you more than others
Do mosquitoes really prefer certain blood types? Experts say factors like carbon dioxide, body heat and skin odour matter far more than blood group when it comes to who gets bitten more

You may have noticed it before. A group spends an evening outdoors, and by the end of it, one person is covered in mosquito bites while others escape almost untouched. It is often blamed on having “sweet blood”, but science paints a far more complex picture.
According to Dr Aparna Chakravarty, Professor of Paediatric Infectious Disease at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, mosquitoes are not drawn to people based on taste alone.
"Mosquitoes don’t really look for blood based on taste. They rely on a cocktail of chemical signals to locate their next meal,” says Dr Chakravarty.
Does blood type really matter?
There is some scientific evidence suggesting that blood group may play a role in how attractive a person is to mosquitoes.
"Research has shown that people with blood group O may be a little more attractive to mosquitoes than those with blood groups A or B. But blood type is only a small part of the story,” explains Dr Chakravarty.
She cautions against overestimating its importance.
"Some laboratory studies have shown that mosquitoes are more likely to land on people with blood group O, but that should not be seen as a major risk factor for mosquito-borne diseases,” she adds.
In simple terms, your blood type might slightly influence attraction, but it is far from the deciding factor.
What really attracts mosquitoes
Mosquitoes are highly sensitive to the signals our bodies naturally produce. These cues help them locate humans with surprising precision.
"Mosquitoes are much more attracted to the carbon dioxide we breathe out, to body heat, to skin odour and to certain chemicals produced naturally by skin bacteria,” says Dr Chakravarty.
Research shows that mosquitoes can detect carbon dioxide from up to 30 metres away. This makes certain individuals more noticeable than others.
People who tend to attract more bites include:
- Those who have been exercising
- Pregnant women
- Larger adults
These groups typically produce more carbon dioxide, making them easier for mosquitoes to find.
Body heat and sweat also play a role. Compounds such as lactic acid and ammonia, released through sweat, further increase attractiveness to mosquitoes.
Not all mosquitoes behave the same
Different mosquito species have different habits and preferences, which also affects who gets bitten and when.
The Aedes aegypti mosquito, known for spreading dengue, chikungunya and Zika, has adapted to prefer humans and is most active during the daytime. In contrast, the Anopheles mosquito, which transmits malaria, is typically active from dusk to dawn.
This means the time of day and environment can influence your risk just as much as your body chemistry.
Why exposure matters more than blood type
While people often worry about whether they are more “attractive” to mosquitoes, the bigger factor is how much exposure they have.
"If a person is of blood group A, then he or she can still get dengue or malaria if bitten by an infected mosquito. Exposure to mosquitoes is far more important than blood group,” emphasises Dr Chakravarty.
In other words, anyone can be at risk if they are bitten, regardless of their blood type.
How to protect yourself from mosquito bites
Prevention remains the most effective way to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases.
"The best strategy remains the prevention of bites. Use mosquito repellents containing DEET, picaridin or IR3535,” advises Dr Chakravarty.
She also recommends simple but effective measures:
- Wear full-sleeved clothing
- Use window screens
- Sleep under insecticide-treated nets in malaria-prone areas
- Clear stagnant water around your home regularly
The bottom line
The idea that mosquitoes prefer “sweet blood” is more myth than fact. While blood type may have a minor influence, it is not something you should worry about.
"The mosquito can’t tell your blood type until it bites you. It follows your breath, body temperature and skin odour,” says Dr Chakravarty.
What truly matters is reducing exposure.
"Don’t worry about your blood type, worry about limiting your exposure to mosquitoes. That is what really brings down the risk of dengue, malaria and chikungunya,” she concludes.
In the end, the science is clear. It is not about who you are, but how detectable you are to a mosquito.
