Projections suggest that India could witness a staggering 300 to 400 per cent increase in summer heatwaves by the end of the century, raising serious concerns about public health, livelihoods and economic stability.
Is India actually heating up faster than it appears?
While on the face of it, you may find India’s average temperature rising by only 0.7°C over the past century, climate scientists say even relatively small increases in average temperatures can sharply intensify extreme weather events such as heatwaves.
Research shows that heatwaves across India are becoming more frequent, longer-lasting and more severe due to climate change and human-driven warming.
Several studies also indicate that dangerous warm nights are rising faster than daytime temperatures, leaving people with little opportunity to recover from prolonged heat exposure.
This shift is especially worrying because high night-time temperatures prevent the human body from cooling down properly, increasing the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
The health risks are growing more severe
Doctors and climate researchers warn that extreme heat is increasingly becoming a public health emergency in India.
Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can trigger symptoms including dehydration, heat cramps, heatstroke and severe stress on the heart, kidneys and respiratory system. Vulnerable groups including the elderly, children, outdoor labourers and low-income communities face the greatest risk.
Scientific studies have already linked rising temperatures in India to higher heat-related mortality. A study found that increasing summer temperatures between 1960 and 2009 significantly raised the probability of large-scale heat-related deaths across the country.
Researchers are also increasingly concerned about the impact of humid or “oppressive” heatwaves, which combine high temperatures with high humidity. These conditions make sweating less effective, sharply increasing physical stress on the body.
Most of all, workers and livelihoods face major threats
The economic consequences of extreme heat are becoming equally alarming.
According to findings highlighted in recent reports, annual labour hours lost in India due to heat exposure are now more than 124 per cent higher than they were during the 1990s. Agriculture alone accounts for nearly two-thirds of those losses.
Workers in construction, farming, delivery services and other outdoor sectors are among the hardest hit. As temperatures rise beyond safe working conditions, productivity declines and health risks increase.
Recent reporting from across Indian cities has shown how gig workers and labourers are struggling to cope with temperatures exceeding 45°C, often while living in poorly ventilated housing with little nighttime relief. Many report exhaustion, dizziness and chronic sleep deprivation caused by relentless heat.
Climate experts estimate that reduced labour capacity linked to heat exposure already results in annual income losses of nearly $194 billion in India.
Indian cities could become heat trap zones soon
Urban areas are expected to face particularly severe impacts because of the “urban heat island” effect. Concrete buildings, asphalt roads, shrinking green cover and rising energy consumption trap heat, making cities significantly warmer than surrounding rural areas.
Experts warn that densely populated regions in north, central and eastern India are especially vulnerable as heatwaves intensify.
Studies by climate researchers and institutions such as the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) suggest that a majority of Indian districts already face high to very high heatwave risk. Rising humidity is further worsening conditions in several regions.
Why is this alarming?
Researchers say India’s vulnerability stems from a dangerous combination of factors: rapid urbanisation, population density, dependence on outdoor labour and limited access to cooling infrastructure in many areas.
Climate models project that heatwaves in India will continue to intensify under future warming scenarios, particularly if greenhouse gas emissions remain high. Some studies suggest concurrent day-and-night heatwaves could increase dramatically in coming decades, further escalating health risks.
Agriculture and food security are also under threat. International agencies including the FAO and WMO have warned that rising heat could severely affect rice production and farming communities in regions such as the Ganges and Indus river basins.
