7 ancient Indian water systems that still exist today
India's traditional water harvesting systems reveal centuries of engineering innovation and environmental wisdom. From Rajasthan's johads and Gujarat's stepwells to Tamil Nadu's eri tanks and Bihar's Ahar-Pyne network, these indigenous solutions helped communities conserve water and build climate resilience

Long before dams, pipelines, and water treatment plants became common, communities across India developed ingenious ways to collect, store and distribute water.
Today, owing to climate change and increasing water crisis, terms such as rainwater harvesting have become common, but these centuries-old systems provide evidence that sustainable water management existed even then.
Several of these ancient water conservation methods continue to exist today. Some of them, such as Agrasen Ki Baoli in Delhi and Rani Ki Vav in Gujarat, have become iconic heritage sites, while others are being revived as India grapples with water scarcity, groundwater depletion and the impacts of climate change.
Together, they stand as remarkable examples of engineering skill, architectural marvels and environmental wisdom.
Some of the most notable ancient Indian water systems that still survive today are:
1. Stepwells (Baolis and Vavs)
Among India's most recognisable water structures are stepwells, which have been constructed since the 3rd millennium BC but developed during the 7th and 9th centuries, according to historical records.
These deep wells were lined with elaborate staircases that allowed people to access water even as levels fluctuated with the changing seasons. Famous examples include Rani Ki Vav in Patan, Gujarat; Agrasen Ki Baoli in Delhi; and Chand Baori in Rajasthan.
2. Ahar-Pyne System
The Ahar-Pyne system, believed to have originated during the ancient Magadh period more than 2,000 years ago, consists of reservoirs (ahars) linked by channels (pynes) that store and distribute monsoon water for agriculture.
By capturing excess monsoon water and redirecting it during dry periods, the system helped farmers cope with both floods and droughts. It can still be found in parts of Bihar today.
3. Zing System
High in the cold desert of Ladakh, where rainfall is scarce and rivers often freeze during winter, communities developed the Zing system to store precious glacial meltwater. Small tanks or reservoirs are filled through channels carrying water from melting glaciers and snowfields.
Even today, zings continue to supply water for irrigation and domestic use in several villages across Ladakh.
4. Eri Tank System
The Eri system is a vast network of interconnected tanks that has sustained agriculture in Tamil Nadu for more than a thousand years. Widely expanded during the rule of the Chola dynasty between the 9th and 13th centuries.
These tanks collect rainwater and allow excess water to flow into neighbouring reservoirs. Thousands of eris remain in use across the state.
5. Bamboo Drip Irrigation
Developed by the Khasi and Jaintia communities, bamboo drip irrigation uses gravity and hollow bamboo pipes to transport water from springs to crops with remarkable efficiency.
Believed to be around 200 years old, the system channels water from springs and streams through networks of bamboo tubes that gradually narrow to regulate the flow. This design allows water to be delivered directly to crops with minimal wastage, and the system continues to be practised today.
6. Johads
Johads are small earthen check dams built to harvest rainwater and recharge groundwater. Their origins date back hundreds of years in the arid regions of Rajasthan.
Water collected in a johad gradually seeps into the ground, raising the water table and supporting wells, agriculture, and livestock. Villages across Alwar and neighbouring districts have successfully revived traditional johads in recent decades.
7. Surangam
Hidden beneath the laterite hills of northern Kerala and coastal Karnataka is an ancient groundwater-harvesting technique known as Surangam.
The system consists of horizontal tunnels dug into slopes to tap underground water reserves, similar to the qanat systems found in parts of West Asia. Surangams remain a valuable source of water in districts such as Kasaragod, where many families continue to depend on them.
