Since the sun rises in the east, India's easternmost regions witness daylight before the rest of the country. As a result, these destinations are among the first places in India to experience sunrise.

Dong Valley, Arunachal Pradesh

Dong Valley is one of the most famous places in Arunachal Pradesh, widely known for receiving first rays of the sun in India. Dong is a small picturesque village inhabited by the Meyor community, located about 7 km from Walong on the left bank of the Lohit River. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and dense pine forests, the village offers a truly enchanting setting.

Dong gained international attention when people from around the world gathered here to witness the millennium sunrise on January 1, 2000. Even today, it remains one of the best places in India to experience the country's earliest sunrise.

The most important thing to note is that Indian travellers would need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh, which can be applied for online.

How to reach? 

The best way to reach Dong Valley is either through Assam via Dibrugarh Airport or Tezu Airport. If coming through the Dibrugarh airport, you have to travel via road to reach Tezu and Walong. From Walong, people can avail can either trek to the Dong valley or use a vehicle to reach via road. Most travellers stay overnight in Walong before heading to Dong.

Kibithoo, Arunachal Pradesh

Kibithoo is another village in Arunachal Pradesh that experiences an exceptionally early sunrise. Located near India's eastern border, it is among the first places in the country to welcome the dawn each day. Situated at an elevation of 1,305 metres above sea level on the right bank of the Lohit River, Kibithoo lies about 87 km northeast of Hawai.

Towering mountains and a cool climate enhance the beauty of this remote destination, making it an ideal spot for nature lovers and sunrise enthusiasts.

Kibithoo also has a similar route plan like Dong Valley. After reaching Walong, one can set out on a road journey to reach Kibithoo.

Haflong, Assam

Haflong, the only hill station in Assam, is a picturesque retreat located in the Dima Hasao district. Surrounded by blue hills, scenic rivers and cascading waterfalls, it is a paradise for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and photographers. Often referred to as the "Switzerland of the East," Haflong is also among the first places in India after Arunachal to witness sunrise.

During certain times of the year, the first light of day can be seen as early as 4 am. The destination also experiences long daylight hours during summer. On June 21, 2026, the summer solstice will bring approximately 13 hours and 44 minutes of daylight to the region.

Haflong is well-connected via flights and trains. The nearest airport to Haflong is Silchar Airport. You can take a taxi to Haflong or take a train to Haflong Railway Station on the Lumding–Silchar route.

Dzukou Valley, Nagaland

Dzukou Valley, located along the border of Nagaland and Manipur in the Naga Hills, is another destination known for its early sunrise views. Situated at an altitude of 2,438 metres above sea level, the valley is renowned for its pristine natural beauty, seasonal flowers and rich biodiversity.

Although it is not the very first place in India to witness sunrise, Dzukou Valley offers some of the most spectacular morning landscapes in the country. The rolling green hills and mist-covered valleys create a magical setting as the sun rises over the horizon.

How to reach?

The valley is accessible only via trek. The best option, as suggested by travellers, is to take a flight to Dimapur and then travel by road to Kohima, which should take around 3-4 hours. Upon reaching Kohima, the trek to Dzukou Valley can be started from Viswema or Zakhama village. Local trekking companies offer several packages which could pre-booked before reaching or can be booked on the spot based on time and availability.

Tiger Hill, Darjeeling, West Bengal

Tiger Hill is one of the most famous sunrise viewpoints in India. Located near Darjeeling, it is renowned for the stunning sight of the first golden rays of sunlight illuminating the snow-covered peaks of Kanchenjunga.

The sunrise at Tiger Hill attracts visitors from around the world because of its panoramic views of the Eastern Himalayas.
