Who is Neelkanth Mishra, India's new executive director at World Bank?
The veteran economist, currently serving on key government advisory bodies and leading economic research at Axis Bank, will represent India and three South Asian neighbours at the World Bank board

The Indian government has appointed veteran economist Neelkanth Mishra as the country's next Executive Director at the World Bank in Washington, DC, placing one of India's most prominent economic voices in a key global policymaking role.
The appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), according to an official order issued by the Ministry of Personnel on Thursday. Mishra will serve a three-year term from the date he assumes office and will represent a South Asian constituency that includes India, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Sri Lanka at the World Bank's board.
He will take over from Parameswaran Iyer, who has held the position since February 2023. To ensure a smooth transition, the government has extended Iyer's tenure beyond its scheduled June 19 end date until Mishra formally takes charge in Washington.
Mishra's appointment marks the latest chapter in a career that has spanned public policy, financial markets and economic research. He currently serves as a part-time member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister and also holds leadership roles at the Unique Identification Authority of India and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.
In the private sector, he is Chief Economist at Axis Bank and Head of Global Research at Axis Capital. Before joining the Axis Group in 2023, he spent nearly two decades at Credit Suisse, where he rose to become Managing Director and Co-Head of Equity Strategy for the Asia-Pacific region.
An alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Mishra graduated in Computer Science and Engineering and received the institute's Director's Gold Medal in 1997.
His move to the World Bank comes at a time when developing economies are navigating challenges ranging from climate financing and infrastructure funding to poverty reduction and global growth uncertainties. As Executive Director, Mishra will help shape discussions on development lending and represent the interests of countries in his constituency while advocating for greater representation of emerging economies in global financial institutions.
With experience advising government bodies such as India's Finance Commissions and GST-related panels, Mishra arrives in Washington with a blend of policy expertise and market experience, as India seeks a larger role in shaping the global economic agenda.
