From trade to tourism to tech, PM Modi’s Malaysia visit delivers big wins

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up a two-day official visit to Malaysia on 7–8 February, responding to an invitation from Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The visit reinforced the India–Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) and highlighted shared interests across politics, trade, and culture.

During talks in Putrajaya, both leaders discussed expanding cooperation in sectors like trade, technology, energy, agriculture, health, education, and tourism. They also signed multiple agreements aimed at strengthening collaboration in these areas. The meeting celebrated the countries’ long-standing ties, dating back to 1957, and built on the CSP framework established in 2024.

On the trade front, the leaders focused on growth under the Malaysia‑India Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (Miceca) and the Asean‑India Trade in Goods Agreement (Aitiga). Furthermore, both sides agreed to review these arrangements to make them more efficient and aligned with modern global market dynamics. Notably, Malaysia acknowledged India as a key investment hub, whereas India praised Malaysian companies for their contributions to technology and employment generation.

Meanwhile, the visit also saw the launch of the Malaysia–India Digital Council (Midc) to drive joint efforts in fintech, cybersecurity, AI, and digital infrastructure. Alongside this, both nations explored using local currencies for bilateral trade, aiming to reduce costs and further strengthen financial ties.

In terms of security, both countries reaffirmed their defence cooperation, including joint military exercises and enhanced information sharing to counter terrorism and cross-border crime.

On the people-to-people front, the leaders highlighted cultural, educational, and tourism exchanges. Initiatives such as the Study in India programme and Visit Malaysia 2026 aim to boost mobility, learning, and tourism between the two countries.

Looking at the global stage, PMs Modi and Anwar underscored their commitment to multilateral engagement, including in the UN and Asean, while also highlighting India’s support for Malaysia in Brics initiatives.

Finally, PM Modi expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality extended during the visit and invited PM Anwar Ibrahim to India, thus setting the stage for continued collaboration and strengthened bilateral ties.
