'Pained by his passing': PM Modi expresses grief over demise of ex-LS Secretary General Subhash C Kashyap

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday extended condolences over the passing of former Lok Sabha Secretary-General and noted constitutional expert Subhash C Kashyap. The constitutional scholar passed away at the age of 97.

In his message on Kashyap's demise, PM Modi described him as one of "India's foremost scholars whose contributions to parliamentary and constitutional discourse enriched our society."

He insisted that he was pained after hearing the news. The prime minister went on to recall the accolades Kashyap had acquired throughout the year.

"Pained by the passing of Dr Subhash C Kashyap, who previously served as Secretary General of the Lok Sabha. He was one of India's foremost constitutional scholars whose contributions to parliamentary and constitutional discourse enriched our society. His writings and commitment to strengthening democratic institutions were noteworthy. Condolences to his family and friends," Prime Minister Modi said in a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Rajnath Singh also extended condolences

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed grief over Kashyap's demise. In a post on X, Singh recalled how Kashyap made an enduring contribution to India's legal and intellectual landscape.

"Deeply saddened by the passing of Dr Subhash C Kashyap, former Secretary-General of the Lok Sabha and an eminent constitutional expert. A prolific scholar who authored numerous books that illuminated the complexities of the Constitution and parliamentary democracy, he made an enduring contribution to India's legal and intellectual landscape," Singh wrote in a post on X.

"His extensive work on India's constitutional history, parliamentary democracy, governance, and a wide range of constitutional themes enriched public discourse and deepened the understanding of India's democratic institutions. His writings will remain a source of learning and inspiration for generations to come. I pay my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and countless admirers," he furthered.

Interestingly, Subhash Kashyap, born on May 10, 1929, served on a high-level committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind to prepare a legal framework for simultaneous elections.
