Nipah virus returns? Kerala launches emergency response after man tests positive in Kozhikode

Health authorities in Kerala went on high alert after a 40-year-old man from Feroke, Kozhikode, tested positive for the Nipah virus in a preliminary examination at the Government Medical College Hospital.

While a definitive confirmation is currently awaited from the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune, the state government has immediately moved to activate emergency public health and containment protocols.

Preliminary tracking indicates that the patient experienced a fluctuating illness, initially recovering from a standard fever before relapsing. Due to the gap in definitive diagnosis, the individual visited multiple outpatient departments, diagnostic centres, and a de-addiction facility.

State Health Minister K Muraleedharan stated that the patient had recently leased and personally cleaned out a commercial godown. Investigators strongly suspect the presence of infected fruit bats at the site as the primary source of the transmission.

Dozens of hospital staff, family members, and individuals identified along the patient's preliminary movement route have been directed to undergo immediate self-quarantine.

Following the initial positive result, the patient was transferred to a specialised, secure isolation ward at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.

"There is absolutely no reason for public panic. The health department has already initiated intensive contact tracing and established surveillance zones, treating this with maximum precaution while we wait for the secondary validation from Pune," said Muraleedharan.

The Ramanattukara municipality convened an emergency session to review local containment measures, and restrictions have been placed around the medical college's pay ward to keep the isolation zone completely segregated.

The Nipah virus is a highly lethal zoonotic pathogen capable of causing severe respiratory distress and fatal encephalitis (brain inflammation) in humans. Between 2018 and 2023, Kerala recorded 31 confirmed cases across four separate seasonal flare-ups, resulting in 24 deaths.
